APABA-PA Applauds Historic Nomination of Cindy K. Chung for United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania
Ms. Chung has dedicated her career to public service, to securing justice, and to promoting civil rights, by serving as a prosecutor; first in New York City as a prosecutor for the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, then with the Department of Justice, and currently with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania. In her seventeen years of law practice, Ms. Chung has had an extensive and successful career, handling and prosecuting cases of national significance, including the first case prosecuted under the Shepherd-Byrd Hate Crimes Act and the shooting and killing of civilians in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Ms. Chung has worked to build connections with, and between, law enforcement and community stakeholders and has regularly conducted trainings for both groups on federal civil rights laws. She has spoken about hate crimes at Asian Pacific American community events, including an Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Pennsylvania (APABA-PA) and Allegheny County Bar Association co-sponsored event on hate speech, harassment, and violence, and a City of Pittsburgh and Governor’s Advisory Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs co-sponsored community conversation addressing anti-APA hate during the COVID pandemic.
Ms. Chung is the first Asian Pacific American to be nominated for U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania. If confirmed, she will be the first Asian Pacific American U.S. Attorney in Pennsylvania and the only Asian Pacific American currently leading any prosecutors’ office in Pennsylvania.
APABA-PA applauds and supports Cindy K. Chung’s nomination for U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania and urges the Senate to swiftly confirm her.
